England will play two friendlies during the national break. The first one is already over and the second one is still to come. Coach Gareth Southgate has had to face questions over whether Manchester United defender Harry Maguire deserved his nomination.
Harry Maguire is in the England squad despite criticism. However, he did not feature in the first game against Switzerland, but should be on the pitch from the first minute in Tuesday’s game against Ivory Coast.
Albion coach Gareth Southgate still believes in the Manchester United captain. “He got us to the semi-finals of the World Cup and the final of the European Championship. There can be no doubt that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level,” Southate told the media.
The England coach was happy with Maguire’s performances for the national team in the autumn. He said that his form might be affected by the fact that Manchester United is not in a positive and favourable situation.
Southgate also pointed out that it is difficult to select players for the nomination. He is aware that some players perform brilliantly in the national jersey every time, although it may be different at club level.
“There has to be some compromise. Then who we play against and who will be most useful against the opponent can be a factor. It’s complicated. I understand that everyone has an opinion on who we should and shouldn’t nominate. But at the end of the day, we need the best players to play at the best level,” he added.
England qualified for the World Cup in Qatar with flying colours. In ten matches, they have not lost once, drawn only twice and boasted a luxurious 39-3 record Maguire has started six qualifying matches.
