On Tuesday afternoon, the penultimate eight-final match of this year’s European Football Championship was played. England and Germany clashed, so it was a battle of two heavyweights. How did the game go?

The fans at Wembley were not treated to goal scoring like they were on Monday during the matches between Spain and Croatia and France and Switzerland. In the opening act, both teams came out mainly from a secure defence.

Because of this, there were very few clear-cut opportunities. Timo Werner got the only one for Germany after a pass from Kai Havertz. However, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an excellent save. The score remained tied.

Late in the first half, Harry Kane got his chance after a pass from Raheem Sterling. However, the Tottenham striker also missed his chance as the ball was kicked out at the last moment by stopper Mats Hummels. The game was therefore scoreless going into the final whistle.

Coach Joachim Low’s charges entered the second half a bit more active. In the 47th minute Kai Havertz took a shot, but his attempt from outside the box was saved by Jordan Pickford for a corner kick.

The first goal of the game came in the 75th minute. Luke Shaw’s cross from the left was found accurately by Raheem Sterling, who had no problem in beating Manuel Neuer. The 26-year-old Manchester City player scored his third goal of the tournament.

In the 86th minute, Harry Kane added his second goal of the match, breaking his shooting silence. The goal sent Coach Southgate’s side through to the quarter-finals, where England will play the better of Ukraine-Sweden.
