The opening match of Group D featured England and Croatia. The Czech team was also very interested in the result, as they will face both teams in the next rounds of the group. In the end, the match was won by England 1: 0.
The match at Wembley started in a very unpleasant way. When the Croatian anthem rang through the stadium, the home fans booed and booed. This act drew a lot of negative feedback on social media.
But then the match started, and both teams clearly wanted to win. England grabbed the reins from the first minute and in the sixth minute, young superstar Phil Foden could have put Albion ahead.
He worked a Raheem Sterling pass on the edge of the box, hooked Guardiola and sent a shot onto the bar. The English were in control for the rest of the half, but they didn’t create any chances.
with 3 minutes to go, Sterling raced into the Croatian penalty area, but his effort was stopped by Duje Ćaleta-Car’s hand on the edge of the penalty area and the head referee awarded a direct kick from a very promising position. Kieran Trippier was on hand to execute the ball, but only hit the wall. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
In the 57th minute, Kalvin Phillips had a stellar moment. The Leeds midfielder got the ball in the attacking half, even with a bit of luck he evaded two opposing players and delivered a beautiful pass into the box to Raheem Sterling, who shot past Ljevakovic.
Five minutes later, England could have increased the score. From the left wing, Mason Mount centred to the back post where Harry Kane tried to finish, but instead of scoring he still brought a slight injury to the bar.
In the 66th minute, Croatia also made their presence felt. After a deflected ball, Ante Rebic got to the ball around the penalty spot, but his volley was just wide of the post.
In the last 15 minutes, England were more likely to pull away and wanted to defend the result. The Croatians had more possession of the ball, but the pressure was more optical as they failed to create any clear-cut opportunities. The match ended in a 1: 0 victory for England.
