The English victory over our footballers meant one very scary fact for Albion – England will face Germany in the eighth finals of the European Championship. And as Gary Lineker rightly said
Unfortunately for the English, this statement is true in the vast majority of cases when it comes to the European or World Championship play-offs.
World Championship 1966
The first and last encounter with a successful ending for England. The final was decided by two overtime goals from Geoff Hurst (4: 2), who scored a hat-trick to celebrate the match.
World Championship 1970
This time the two teams met in the quarter-finals and the match went to extra time again, but the Germans were more successful (3: 2).
1990 World Cup
In the quarter-finals the Germans defeated the Czechoslovak team 1:0 and then faced England. Germany did take the lead in the 60th minute, but Gary Lineker countered and sent the game into extra time in the 80th minute.
This time, however, it was undecided and penalties were kicked. The Germans took them 4:3 and also beat Argentina 1:0 in the final. England finished fourth.
EURO 1996
In 1996, the two teams met in the semi-finals again, and this time the match ended 1-1, with no extra time. Germany won 6:5 on penalties and beat our team 2:1 in the final.
World Championship 2010
The last clash between Germany and England in the knockout phase of the tournament took place on 27 June at the 2010 World Cup. The match was very emotional and full of refereeing mistakes, but the Germans eventually blasted England 4: 1 and reached the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Spain.
EURO 2020
This time both teams will face each other again and the English will have a big home advantage as the duel will be played at Wembley. “Football is a game for 22 players and the Germans will always win in the end.”
On Tuesday we will have another football feast, which hopefully will be worth it! However, history clearly suggests that the Germans are simply too good for the English, so it will be interesting to see if England can close the gap on Germany to 2:4.
