End of Krejcikova’s debut, great Fernandez and confident Medvedev. That was Tuesday at the US Open
The first batch of quarterfinal games at Flushing Meadows is over and with it comes another recap. The journey through the last Grand Slam of the season ended unsurprisingly for Barbora Krejcikova, but also for example for the Dutch player Botic van de Zandschlup.
The first batch of quarterfinal games at Flushing Meadows is over and with it comes another recap. The journey through the last Grand Slam of the season ended unsurprisingly for Barbora Krejcikova, but also for example for the Dutch player Botic van de Zandschlup. Then, on the other hand, the freshly 19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez from Canada continues.
The very first to take the courts in New York was Russian Daniil Medvedev. He had as an opponent the qualifier Botice van de Zandschup, who had many valuable scalps under his belt. But the Dutchman was no match for the world number two. A 1: 3 set loss will still help him rocket up the rankings.
The last match of the day featured Felix Auger-Alliasime, who had 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz as his opponent. Unfortunately, the match was not played due to an injury to Alacaraz, and the Canadian will advance to the semifinals where he will face Medvedev.
Among the women, the hangman of the seeded players was 19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez on Monday. After knocking out Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, the Canadian also took on fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina, whom she beat only in a shortened game of the final set.
The second advancing player is Aryna Sabalenka, who did not give a chance to Czech Barbora Krejcikova. After winning 6::1 and 6::4, the Belarusian is on her way to winning her first career Grand Slam. The next hurdle will be the aforementioned Canadian Fernandez.
