Emotions in the finale. Zverev and Fils had to be separated by the umpire

The most valuable tournament of the whole week deserves a proper finale. The tournament in Hamburg got it. And it certainly wasn’t just because Alexander Zverev, who is the home player and defending champion, was in the final.

The most valuable tournament of the whole week deserves a proper finale. The tournament in Hamburg got it. And it certainly wasn’t just because Alexander Zverev, who is the home player and defending champion, was in the final.

  • Zverev took on Fils in the final of the Hamburg tournament
  • There was a lot of emotion at the end of the match
  • The exchange of views between the tennis players had to be stopped by the head umpire

Zverev in the final

Alexander Zverev is one of the most watched players on the ATP circuit. This year he shone especially at the French Open, where he fell in the final to Carlos Alcaraz.

And the final of his home tournament in Hamburg also ended ingloriously for the German tennis player. There, on Sunday, he lost to Frenchman Fils.

The match itself certainly did not bore the spectators. More than three and a half hours of the match was finally cut short only by the shortened game of the third set.

There was no shortage of interesting moments in this duel. The spectators enjoyed all kinds of emotions.

Emotions on the court

The key moment was the underhand serve by Fils at a very important moment in the match. However, his attempt was eventually ruled out.

The German fans did not understand this attempt. In the following moments, they applauded the Frenchman’s mistakes. Which, of course, is beyond tennis ethics.

Then, during the break between games, there was an emotional exchange at Zverev’s bench. It had to be stopped by the head umpire.

Moments later, the 20-year-old Fils showed more mental resilience. Against a more experienced opponent, he won his biggest victory by winning the shortened game.

But he didn’t get much recognition from Zverev. The handshake at the net had all the warmth you could want.

For the German tennis player, this match was not the only emotionally charged encounter. In the eighth round he lost the entire first set after a very controversial situation .

Of course, this does not change the fact that Fils has made his way into the ATP top 20 for the first time in his career after his triumph in the final. Zverev, on the other hand , has experienced the bitterness of the final defeat for the second time in a row and his attack on the ATP top three is postponed for at least some time.
