Emery is on standby waiting for an official offer from Newcastle. What is his take on the speculation?
After Newcastle was taken over by the wealthy Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, it was clear that the big change in the squad would start with the coach. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there is talk in the English media that the new coach of The Magpies will be unveiled this week and it will be Unai Emery.
The Spanish coach already has experience of the Premier League, having coached 78 games on the Arsenal bench. And it has to be said that he didn’t do completely badly, it’s just that in the summer of 2019, his transfers went wrong and he was sacked after poor results in the autumn.
After a few months of rest, Emery then returned to his craft, which he knows very well, taking up an offer from Villarreal, with whom he has had great results.
Last season ended with a victory in the Europa League final against Manchester United, which earned the Spanish side a place in the Champions League, where they share first place in Group F with the Red Devils (both teams have 7 points).
However, things are not so glorious in La Liga, as Villarreal are currently in 13th place with 12 points. With 6. Valleano is already 8 points behind. That might not bother Emery too much though, as he might be moving to England again very soon.
“All I can say is that they have shown interest in me, but I don’t have any information other than that,” the Spanish coach told Movistar after Tuesday’s game.
Emery went on to say that he has not yet received any official offer and will prepare for the next game against Getafe.
“If that happens, I will go and talk to Fernando Roig (club president). I haven’t opened but I haven’t closed any doors either, I’ll discuss everything with Fernando and the club. I can’t say more on that,” Emery finished on the subject of Newcastle.
Now the only question that remains is whether the management of the English club has someone other than Emery at the top of the list of new coaches. One can assume that Newcastle would not reject the Spanish coach!
Moreover, it can be said that he is practically perfect for this role, having already built a number of “new” teams. But all will be revealed in the days to come. In any case, Newcastle can’t delay, they play Brighton this weekend and need to start picking up points, as they are already 6 points behind the first non-relegation place.
