The WTA tournament in Ostrava will take place in 2022. The Women’s Tennis Association announced in its updated calendar that the J&T Banka Ostrava Open can look forward to its third edition. With this, the Czech Republic will once again host two events of the most prestigious circuit in one season.
In 2020 and 2021, the Ostravar Arena was played during the period of anti-pandemic measures. “This year we are looking forward to it even more, because we would like to welcome the spectators in the hall without respirators,” hopes for more pleasant conditions Tomáš Petera, owner of the organizing agency Perinvest.
Thanks to the participation of interesting names, the tournament has received positive reactions from fans. The good organisation was also appreciated by the WTA management, so they decided that top tennis will be seen in Ostrava for the third time in a row. The first edition was held only as a replacement for the cancelled event in Zhengzhou.
This time, the tennis players will strive for the Ostrava triumph from 3 to 9 October. “We hope that not only the Czech top players will be presenting themselves to the audience, but since the fight for the participation in the Champions Tournament will be at its peak during that time, I think we can also look forward to the world top players,” Petera said.
J&T Banka Ostrava Open is still waiting for its Czech winner. Last year, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won the singles title, while last year, Estonia’s Anett Kontaveitova won the doubles title. And even in the doubles, the Czechs have not yet been successful enough to reach the winner’s trophy.
But the elite of the women’s white sport will appear on the Czech courts this year before the Ostrava “pentathlon”. The traditional WTA 250 tournament in Prague’s Stromovka is scheduled for July. Domestic women’s tennis, which is enjoying a golden era, is doing much better there. Last year, Barbora Krejcikova dominated the singles and the doubles pair Bouzkova – Hradecka.
Last year, however, the WTA events were not the only chance to see the best tennis players in the world play in our country. At the beginning of November, the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup national team competition was held at the O2 Arena in Prague, where the Russians triumphed.
