On Thursday, both semi-finals of the women’s singles are on the Wimbledon schedule. The Czech Republic will also have a representative, as Markéta Vondroušová will play against Elina Svitolina. Who will qualify for the final?
Elina Svitolina took more than a year off from tennis due to her pregnancy. She returned to the courts this April in Charleston. It is certainly a successful return, as she managed to dominate the tournament in Strasbourg and played the quarterfinals at the French Open.
The 76th player of the WTA rankings has also transferred her great form to the grass court. The 28-year-old Ukrainian will play in the semi-finals of Wimbledon, the most famous tennis tournament, for the second time in her life. In 2019, she was no match for the late winner Simona Halep.
The fate at the All England Club was not at all pleasant for Svitolina this year. In the first round she had to deal with Venus Williams. In the second round, she ran into Elise Mertens, whom she defeated after sets of 6: 1, 1: 6 and 6: 1.
In the third round she found a recipe for Sofia Kenin, whom she defeated after sets 7: 6 and 6: 2. In the semi-final match with Azarenka, things looked very bad for the Ukrainian, but she managed to turn around the unfavourable score of 2: 6 and 0: 2 and enjoyed the progress.
In the quarter-finals she met the queen of the WTA ranking Iga Swiatek. The world number one had last lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the duels she played, a duel that was more than two months old.
Markéta Vondroušová is currently ranked 42nd in the WTA rankings. For the native of Sokolov, this is the best result at Wimbledon, but she would like to play the second Grand Slam final of her career here (the first was in 2019 at the French Open).
In the first three rounds, the 24-year-old tennis player from the Czech Republic did not lose a single set. That came in the eighth round against compatriot Maria Bouzkova. But she managed to turn the match around from an unfavourable situation.
She came very close to being eliminated in the quarterfinals against the American Pegula. In the deciding set she was already leading 4:1 and even had a break point to lead 5:1. But she couldn’t take advantage of it, which turned out to be the key moment of the whole match. Vondroušová won five games in a row, which put her in the top four.
Both players know each other well, as this will be their sixth match together. The Ukrainian has won three times and given her previous performances I expect her to extend her lead on Thursday. If she can rely on her first serve, she should be the more dominant player in the match. Plus, she had a tougher draw here.
