Viktoria Plzeň takes the Champions League qualification as a huge success, which is confirmed by looking at the stadium capacity of all 32 participants. Plzen clearly has the smallest stadium, how are the closest competitors?

Plzeň realised the size of the Champions League already in the last qualifying round. The Olympic Stadium in Baku can accommodate almost 70,000 fans, and due to the colours of Karabakh’s jerseys, the arena looked like Santiago Bernabeu on TV.

When Plzeň were promoted with a 2:1 win in the home return leg, they probably knew that with a capacity of 11,722 they would be the team with the smallest stadium.

But that the second smallest football site has almost three times the number of seats is surprising to say the least.

Jan Breydel’s Sadion in Bruges has a capacity of 29,062 spectators, while Maccabi Haifa and Leverkusen have approximately 20,000 more seats in their arenas. Leverkusen therefore remains behind the rest of the teams from the top 5 leagues.

The stadiums of the Danish champion Copenhagen, the Croatian champion Dinamo Zagreb, the Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk and the Israeli champion Maccabi Haifa can still fit under 40,000 fans.

On the other hand, Camp Nou has the largest capacity with 99 354 fans, while the other teams can already fit under 82 000. The silver place is held by Borussia Dortmund with 81,365 spectators, while Real Madrid takes the bronze with 81,044.
