Arsenal London’s famous academy produces football’s greatest gems. Ever since the appointment of the French gentleman Wenger, the Gunners have been known for their great offspring who shine in the red and white jersey. However, this is not always the case, many great players have not been given a bigger chance in the first or reserve team, and so have chosen the transfer route. One of them is Donyell Malen.
The young Donyell Malen took his first football steps at HVV Hollandia Youth in the Netherlands, but in 2008 he was bought by Ajax Amsterdam to join one of the most prestigious football academies in Europe. Malen went through all the youth selections until the U17 team, where his involvement with Ajax came to an end.
In the summer of 2015, he was in fact bought by Arsenal. But Malen lasted only two years there. He was one of the most brilliant gems of young cannoneers, but unfortunately he didn’t get an opportunity in the first team, forcing a transfer. At the age of 18, he returned to his native Holland.
PSV Eindhoven paid a hefty €600,000 for him and it has to be said that the investment paid off. At first it was expected that Malen would join the youth team and then slowly start to peek into the first team. However, the young Dutchman immediately showed that the youth league was not enough for him.
He scored 13 goals in 22 games and also made his debut in the first team in which he played 4 games this season. In the following season he was already a stable member of the starting line-up and even played in six UEFA Champions League matches. In total, he scored 11 goals and added 4 assists in his first full season in adult football.
The 19/20 season was a turning point for Malen. He became one of the team’s most important players and finally made a significant impact on the league’s goal scoring statistics, where he finished in the top ten. In total, he collected 17 accurate shots and 9 goal assists.
This year, however, the young Dutchman is celebrating the season of his life. 27 goals and 10 assists in all competitions is the record of one of the most valuable players in the entire Eredivisie. So far, he maintains a value of 30 million euros, which, however, may increase this summer, as Malen is in the Dutch national team for the upcoming European Championships.
The biggest aspirant to get the Dutch football gem is Liverpool. The Reds have come out in the past saying that they would love to get Malen and coach Klopp is said to be a big fan of his. Malen himself wishes to leave as early as this summer to take a step forward in his career. One of the interested parties is said to be Barcelona.
