Martin Dúbravka was one of Newcastle United’s key players until recently, he was happy at the club and won a few prestigious awards. Before the season, however, he went on loan to Manchester United but has now been withdrawn from the club. He could move again soon, as he is set to play a part in a very interesting swap.

The Slovakian goalkeeper, who made a name for himself at Liberec or Sparta Prague, moved to the north of England in the winter of 2018. Originally only on loan, however, Martin Dúbravka immediately became Newcastle United’s number one and retained the position for several seasons.

He was voted the club’s best player in the 2019/20 season, and even won the 2018 North East England Football Journalists’ Player of the Year award, which has been won by Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan in the past.

In his time as number one, Dúbravka was often a key factor in why Newcastle managed to stay among the elite. But in the summer of 2022, Nick Pope arrived at the club and he is set to be the driving force behind the club in the new era under the wealthy owners.

So the former Sparta goalkeeper went on loan to Manchester United, where he was expected to stay for a full season. However, that didn’t happen as he was withdrawn in early January and his future is being addressed.

Will Dúbravka be part of the swap?

Martin Dúbravka is a quality goalkeeper. Sometimes he doesn’t forgive himself for an unnecessary mistake, but he makes up for it with great saves. When he’s fit, we can talk about him as one of the leading goalkeepers in the Premier League.

No wonder he’s in demand. And at an interesting club. Sky Sports is reporting a possible move to Leicester City, who are struggling after the departure of Kasper Schmeichel.

The number one is Danny Ward, but he has almost no experience of the Premier League and his performances are not great. So Dúbravka could easily take his place and help Leicester save their botched season.

But there is a catch. Getting the Slovakian goalkeeper would cost Leicester dearly. Newcastle are after an English star, none other than James Maddison, who has been performing well for a long time.

Maddison should have been on his way out in the summer, but the club kept him. Of course, given his price, Newcastle would still pay some money. However, in the case of a swap for Dúbravka, he could come much cheaper.
