Last year, Lukáš Ambros was one of the leaders of Wolfsburg’s U19 team and on Saturday he made his debut for the A-team. And not just any team. He assisted once in 45 minutes, and with a through pass he also had a hand in the goal for 5:0.
Ambros celebrated his 18th birthday two weeks ago, and an invitation to training camp with the A-team was the best possible coming-of-age present for him. Experienced coach Niko Kovac pulled him in with players like Max Kruse and Luca Waldschmidt.
Wolfsburg have fallen short of expectations in recent years, finishing only twelfth last season and ten points behind the cup standings. It was even closer to relegation, with a nine-point cushion on barrage side Hertha Berlin.
That’s why the Croatian coach invited several youngsters to the training camp. On Saturday, Wolfsburg played a friendly against Veltins and in the starting line-up, for example, Ambrose’s colleague from the nineteen Felix Lange got a chance.
Lange opened the scoring in the eighth minute and the Wolves led 4:0 at half-time. After the change of sides, a completely different eleven came in, including Ambros. In the 53rd minute he sent a great through pass, after which Waldschmidt hit the open goal.
The Czech midfielder’s next good moment came in the 77th minute at 7:1. On the left side of the opponent’s penalty area, he took a looping tackle and then found Ridle Baku with a centre, who sent the ball under the crossbar.
The Czech youth international could not have wished for a better record with the A-team, let’s see how he performs in the next matches.
