Chelsea managed to pull off a one-goal deficit against Dortmund in Tuesday’s Champions League showpiece, winning 2:0 to secure their place among the top eight teams in the competition. Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz scored.
Chelsea started actively, Raheem Sterling even went alone to the goalkeeper, but he slowed down and was stopped by the yellow defence. In the eighth minute, Kai Havertz ran in behind the defence but missed the ball perfectly in the air and missed the goal.
At the other end, Marco Reus tried his luck from a direct kick, but Kepa Arrizabalaga made an excellent save. Although Dortmund held the ball for most of the first half, Chelsea were more dangerous shooting.
In the 38th minute, Alexander Meyer saved Raheem Sterling’s shot and Kai Havertz scored from the rebound, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The visitors’ goalkeeper was then successful against Kai Havertz’s attempt, but he didn’t keep a clean sheet until half-time.
In the 44th minute, Sterling was lucky to get free in the whitewash and opened the scoring with an uncompromising shot under the crossbar. And after the change of sides, the Blues continued their quest for a turnaround with a penalty at the hands of Marius Wolf.
Havertz missed the penalty kick, but the head referee had the whole situation replayed due to players running in prematurely and the German international made no mistake for the second time. At the other end, Giovanni Reyna had a goal on his feet, but the Chelsea defence blocked.
And in the 58th minute, Jude Bellingham failed in a good position. Dortmund seemed to take the bad luck from Chelsea in the first half, they were better but struggled at the end. Chelsea managed standard situations and the time passed pleasantly quickly.
And the Blues really locked down their own penalty area in the final third and didn’t let Dortmund do anything. With a 2-1 win, they advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
