Dortmund’s summer signing Sébastien Haller will have to undergo chemotherapy. A testicular tumour discovered less than a month ago proved to be malignant and the 28-year-old striker will miss several months with the German side.

Sébastien Haller came to Dortmund as a replacement for Erling Halland, who transferred to Manchester City and was supposed to replace him mainly in the goal-scoring department.

Haller showed in the Champions League last season that he has a keen eye for goal as he managed to score 11 goals in 8 games to become the third top scorer. Only Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema were better than him.

The Ivory Coast international wasn’t feeling well at a training camp in Switzerland, so he went for a medical examination, during which he was found to have a testicular tumour. He underwent successful surgery this week and is now facing chemotherapy.

Because of the finding, it is likely that he will not help his new club until the end of the fall season. “Sebastien Haller will miss Borussia Dortmund for several months. Histological findings have revealed a malignant testicular tumour,” Borussia said on their club website.

Dortmund have temporarily lost another player from their attacking ranks and will be busy trying to find a replacement before the start of the new season.

“We are preparing for different scenarios. We are communicating with the scouting department and working on different options and ideas. But we will only do something if it makes sense in the end,” Borussia sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.
