The talented Ukrainian tennis player Dajana Jastremska and her doping scandal is gaining momentum. The WTA world number thirty-three was suspended in January after she tested positive for the banned substance mesterolone in her urine. The player failed with several appeals and it is possible that she has made the situation even more complicated by explaining the presence of the banned substance in her body.

Dajana Jastremska tried to get her ban lifted at the CAS international sports arbitration before the Australian Open. She was so sure of the success of her action that she even travelled to Australia. But to no avail. The CAS rejected the appeal, as did the Ukrainian’s second attempt in early May.

She defended herself by saying that the anabolic steroid got into her body through contamination.

But the Ukrainian’s former boyfriend brought a stir to the case when he started claiming that Yastremska’s father offered him money to take the blame and testify before the ITF that the substance entered the tennis player’s body through him during sexual intercourse.

His claim was pointed out by the German newspaper Spiegel: “I did it. I had a blood test and wrote a statement. And all for free, even though he offered me money. But then he told me that I still had to have a hair test. Then I just took my car from her.”

All the while, however, Jastremska insists on her innocence. “I have been scientifically advised that the result of the doping control corresponds to a definite form of contamination,” she said in one of her tweets.

She should be careful what she says, however, because the ITF, through a spokeswoman, has explained that giving false information in an attempt to influence the hearing could lead to a separate trial.

Jastremska last played a match on the WTA circuit in November in Linz. And it’s likely she’ll have to wait quite a while for her next match.
