Don’t mention Adebayor! Arsenal upset their own fans as they celebrate 1000th goal at the Emirates
He was a reliable goal scoring machine, but he is not remembered fondly after leaving the club. Emmanuel Adebayor is a forbidden word at the Emirates Stadium, yet Arsenal’s social networks have singled him out after his big anniversary.
He was a reliable goal scoring machine, but he is not remembered fondly after leaving the club. Emmanuel Adebayor is a forbidden word at the Emirates Stadium, yet Arsenal’s social networks have singled him out after his big anniversary.
It didn’t start off well. When Gilberto Silva scored his first league goal at Emirates Stadium in August 2006, it was only enough for a 1-1 draw. 17 years on and 1,002 goals have come from the Gunners’ boots at Arsenal Stadium.
The author of the round goal will forever be Leandro Trossard. And it’s worth noting that he really went for it. His header into the Burnley net hit the bar and he played the rest of the game with an injured arm.
In a post on social media, Arsenal published photos of five of the ten goalscorers who scored the anniversary goals. Alongside the aforementioned Silva and Trossard, the marketing department chose Mikel Arteta (500th goal), Theo Walcott (200th goal) and, surprisingly, Emmanuel Adebayor.
Although the African striker scored his 100th goal at the Emirates, he was scoring goal after goal at Arsenal, yet fans remember him fondly. After all, he subsequently played for Tottenham and Manchester City, and his celebration in a Citizens jersey against the Gunners is now legendary.
That’s why Arsenal supporters have spoken out. “Adebayor is banned from this site. Let him be here for the last time,” wrote Instagram user Thekofikent under the photos, with which dozens of fans, including Matt Calderone, agreed. “Never post Adebayor again!”
The admins probably deliberately didn’t tag Adebayor in the post. The African striker took it anyway as intense criticism with traditional humour. He wrote: ” Next time make sure you tag me.”
It remains a wonder why the Gunners did not choose photos of other “round” scorers. They are Robin van Persie, Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz and Charlie Patino.
