Luka Doncic had the fourth-best performance in NBA history last night in Atlanta after scoring an incredible 73 points in the game. He surpassed his NBA high by a full 13 points. The second leading scorer responded decisively to Joel Embiid.

In the Atlanta Hawks vs. Dallas Mavericks (143:148), Slovenian Luka Doncic made an indelible mark in NBA history. He scored an incredible 73 points. The second best scorer of the current season answered Joel Embiid’s 70-point performance very decisively.

The competition for the NBA’s top scorer of the current season is heating up. Two-time leading scorer Embiid has a lot of competition in the form of Doncic. It offers a bit of a parallel from the NHL, where Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon are competing for the top spot in scoring.

Embiid is going for his third goal scoring crown this season, he is the only one who has crossed the 50-point mark three times in a season. Slovenia’s Doncic did it for the second time this season.

After Embiid set a personal best of 70 points to make his mark in the 70+ club, Doncic responded with an incredible 73 points. That’s the fourth best shooting performance in NBA history. And he celebrated it appropriately, too.

It looks like the battle for king of scorers has narrowed down to just these two greats this season. Embiid currently leads the way with an incredible 36.0 points per game average.

This is reminiscent of Michael Jordan’ s amazing season in 1986/87, when he broke the 3,000-point mark with an average of 37.1 points per game and never missed a game. However, the Slovenian has narrowed the gap to 34.6 points per game with this night of his life.

Doncic has made his mark on the history books

In addition, Doncic missed a triple-double by just three assists in this performance. In fact, he also recorded 10 rebounds in the game. Only two greats in NBA history have scored more points. Wilt Chamberlain (100) and Kobe Bryant (81).

However, Chamberlain managed to score 78 points and also scored 73 points twice, David Thomspon also managed to score 73 points once. So this is tied for the fourth best performance of all time.

But it is, of course, a club record for the Mavericks. Doncic helped himself to this performance this time with very good shooting from the field. He converted 25 of 33 field goal attempts. He also made 8 of 13 successful three-point attempts. And he helped himself to 15 free throws.

He also set a new club record for points in a half. The Slovenian scored a total of 41 points, surpassing Dirk Nowitzki’s previous best of 41 points set on November 3, 2009 against Utah by 8 points. He helped himself to that record with 16 shots from the field and six three-point baskets. On the Hawks side, traditional workhorse Trae Young scored 30 points and had 11 assists.
