The first round of the star-studded tournament in Vienna will bring an interesting match between Dominic Thiem and Tommy Paul. Will Thiem build on the results of the last few weeks and notch up a very valuable win in front of his home crowd?
Dominic Thiem is a twenty-nine year old tennis player from Austria, so he will have the support of the home crowd in Vienna. He is currently only 113th in the ATP rankings, but this is due to a long enforced break.
The former world number three has been gradually improving his performances since his return. This is evidenced by last week’s tournament in Antwerp, Belgium, where he scored scalps of Cerundolo and Hurkacze. After sets 6::7, 6::3 and 6::7 he was not able to keep up with Sebastian Korda.
His opponent in Tuesday’s match will be Tommy Paul. The 25-year-old American currently occupies the 30th position on the ATP ranking. His career high is 28th, where he was in September.
He has already won 35 competitive matches in the 2022 calendar year, and is still waiting for his maiden trophy. Last year, he managed to dominate the event in Stockholm, Sweden, beating Shapovalov 6:4, 2:6 and 6:4 in the final.
Among this year’s biggest successes are the fourth round at Wimbledon, where he lost to Cameron Norrie in three sets, and the quarter-final appearance in Montreal. There, he was stopped by Daniel Evans after a close match.
On Tuesday, the second match between the two players will take place in Vienna. The first one dates back to 2019, when Thiem won the French Open 3:1 in sets. Later, he also found a successful recipe against Novak Djokovic and played the final against Rafael Nadal.
Now he would like to adjust the stats to 2:0. It wouldn’t be a big surprise as he is the paper favourite to advance. His home environment, among other things, could help him.
