The quarter-finals of the tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland, will feature a match between Dominic Thiem and Juan Pablo Varillas. Thiem is the paper favourite to reach the semi-finals and should dominate the first match.
Dominic Thiem is a twenty-eight-year-old Austrian tennis player. He is only 274th in the ATP rankings, but this is due to an enforced break of more than nine months. His career high is third place in March 2020.
His return from injury has not been optimal, with the Austrian losing his opening seven matches of the 2022 calendar year. His first major success came at the Bastad tournament, where Thiem made it through to the quarter-finals. However, he fell short to Sebastian Baez, a later finalist.
It is already certain that he will at least equal last week’s result. He secured it with wins over Hugo Gaston and Federico Delbonis. With the latter, he had to fight off two set points in the tiebreak of the first set, but managed to win the match after 7::6 and 6::3.
His opponent on Friday will be Juan Pablo Varillas. The 26-year-old tennis player from Peru usually plays in challenger tournaments, which of course corresponds to his position on the ATP ranking – 115th place.
In Gstaad, however, he found a recipe for the Italian Lorenzo Sonega, after which he also scored the scalp of the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut. Interestingly, in both matches the fate of the first set had to be decided by a tiebreak.
The paper favourite to advance is Dominic Thiem. If he continues his recent performances, he should be able to advance to the semi-finals. He has odds of 1.40 to advance, while his odds of 2:0 are 2.12.
