Arsenal won their 26th Premier League round match on Saturday, beating Newcastle 4-1 at home. The Gunners dominated the match, quickly took the lead and never let their opponents within striking distance. They are only two points behind first-placed Liverpool.
The Gunners started very actively, they had two corners in the first minute, then in the seventh minute Bukayo Saka threatened for the first time, but Loris Karius dealt with the first shot. So did Kai Havertz’s attempt from the edge of the box three minutes later.
In the 17th minute, Emirates Stadium was already celebrating, after a corner kick, the Newcastle defence scored an own goal. And a few dozen seconds later it was two goals to the good, Gabriel Martinelli’s hilarious blind pass setting up Havertz’s save into a half-empty net.
Newcastle were absolutely clueless in their own half, Arsenal’s pressing giving them huge problems. Saka could have made the final decision in the 38th minute, but Karius was just in time at the right post to head the ball out for a corner.
While Arsenal were enjoying the game, the Magpies were just waiting for the half-time whistle. They were happy to get into the attacking half in the first half. Just after the change of sides, Havertz went alone at Karius, but his left foot missed the target.
Arsenal continued their cannonade after the change of sides
It wasn’t until the 49th minute that Newcastle threatened the goal for the first time, but David Raya had an easy job. Alexander Isaka missed in a good position and Saka made the difference in the 65th minute. He finished the individual action with a ground shot.
And in the 70th the Gunners added a fourth piece, Jakub Kiwior headed in after a corner kick. Then Arsenal made a substitution and in the 84th minute they cashed in, a header by substitute and Arsenal offspring Joe Willock. He didn’t celebrate the strike.
In the end, substitutes Emile Smith-Rowe and Reiss Nelson did not look up to Karius, so the match ended 4:0. Arsenal are now just two points behind third-placed Liverpool. Newcastle are eighth, two points behind the Top 7.
