Domestic Euro disaster? Germans play terribly, lack creativity in attack
Totally failed World Cup in Qatar, bad results and performances. The German national football team, led by coach Hans Flick, was supposed to calm down its fans in June with three friendlies before the upcoming home Euros. But that didn’t happen at all.
Totally failed World Cup in Qatar, bad results and performances. The German national football team, led by coach Hans Flick, was supposed to calm down its fans in June with three friendlies before the upcoming home Euros. But that didn’t happen at all.
The Germans’ crisis began at the winter World Cup. Huge holes in the defence were exposed, while the team faced a below-average Costa Rica, the struggling Spanish and the hard-working but qualitatively mediocre Japanese.
In Qatar, the Germans finished with four points in the group and received a lot of criticism from journalists and the public. The following March’s national team meeting they managed at least one win and one loss.
This time it was worse. The opening clash with Ukraine was the 1000th match of the national team. The German defence made one mistake after another, losing 1: 3 and only saving a 3: 3 draw at the very end from a penalty.
In Poland, the Germans even lost 0:1. They kept the ball, but they didn’t take their chances and, above all, they didn’t surprise the honest defence with anything. Coach Hans Flick was under even more pressure before the last game in June and did not improve his reputation against Colombia.
The South Americans were more active and dangerous from the first minutes, and the Germans made one mistake after another from the lineout. Offensively, except for Jamal Musiala’s efforts, they lacked the element of surprise and acceleration. The 0:2 loss was well deserved.
From the faces of the German fans in the audience and their reactions on social media, it is clear that they are beginning to fear their home championship. And it is no wonder, because the Germans are clearly missing both outfield players and a killer in attack.
Meanwhile, the rest of the squad is absolutely world-class and it is a wonder why a group of such great footballers cannot come up with something superior and surprising up front. In any case, they will have to find courage before next summer, because a medal at the domestic championship counts.
