Alex King made his debut for West Ham on Wednesday night at one of the best stadiums in the world, Old Trafford. What are his chances of making regular appearances for the Hammers?
King couldn’t have asked for a better debut in his new job. At Manchester United’s iconic stadium, the Hammers were able to fight back from a league defeat to advance to the next round of the EFL Cup with a 1-0 win.
The rotation allowed David Moyes to spare two of the team’s biggest stars, Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, so captain Mark Noble and Czech international Alex Král got into the game.
What are Kral’s chances of making a regular appearance in the starting line-up? At the moment, it’s very difficult for him. The two defensive stalwarts, Rice and Soucek, are the two defensive stalwarts of the team. Their deployment is out of the question.
The option earlier would have been to shift to offensive midfielder, as Soucek played for a while when he came to West Ham, with Rice and Noble operating behind him. But at that point West Ham lacked an offensive midfielder.
Pablo Fornals was in great form at this point, and he took the number ten position for himself. Benrahma, who otherwise plays on the wing, can also play as a sub. And against Manchester United, Manuel Lanzini, who is also a holding midfielder, fired the winner.
So at the moment, King is more of a rotation player who has to wait for his chance. But there will indeed be a lot of matches, in the Europa League, in the cups or even in the league he could get enough chances.
However, he will probably have to wait for Declan Rice’s departure to get a solid position in the starting lineup. The youngster is coveted by the whole of England, led by Manchester United and Chelsea, so his departure could be imminent in the coming years.
