Not only the world of Formula 1, but perhaps also all motorsport fans have been greatly affected by the news, which is several tens of hours old, about the death of Frank Williams. The F1 icon and founder of the Williams stable has left our world.
Is that fair? Certainly not, but unfortunately, the death of a man is also an integral part of human life. It is all the sadder when it is not only a good man, but also a person who is literally an icon and the head of a family.
Yes, in today’s Formula 1, it’s hard to think of an entire team as a family anymore, as stables have thousands, in some cases tens of thousands of employees. But the foundations of the team were laid by the Williams family way back when.
On this very sad occasion, Formula 1 has produced a video that will bring tears to the eyes of all Williams and F1 fans in particular.
“I loved workingwith him because he was a real racer. His life was his team,” we see Jacques Villeneuve saying in the video.
“Frank is one of a kind. His whole life was dedicated to racing and motorsport, regardless of all the ups and downs,” said Walter Wolff, former Williams team boss.
“I will always admire Frank’s determination and passion for racing. He never, ever gave up. His resilience is phenomenal, ” explained Patrick Head, co-founder of Williams.
Sir Frank can be suitably proud of his life’s work. Yes, Williams may not be doing as well as it used to, but it is still a stable that has clearly, and it must be said, very significantly made its mark on Formula 1 history.
Williams Racing has over 760 starts under its belt and as a constructor the team has celebrated nine titles, mainly from the 1980s and 1990s.
Seven world championship titles have also been won by this stable among the drivers. Jacques Villeneuve, Daymon Hill, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg and Alan Jones celebrated the championship title in Williams colours.
And as for specific stats? 114 wins, 313 podium finishes, 128 pole positions, 133 fastest laps and 3,578 points.
There is now nothing to do but humbly thank Williams for his lifetime of effort and wish the team or his family nothing but the best for the future. May he rest in peace.
