Djokovic nor Alcaraz. Underrated Zverev returns to silver position in ATP rankings
Two years ago he was very badly injured at the French Open. Upon his return, some experts almost wrote him off. However, Alexander Zverev is steadily rising on the courts and after the US Open he will reach the second place of the ATP rankings.
Two years ago he was very badly injured at the French Open. Upon his return, some experts almost wrote him off. However, Alexander Zverev is steadily rising on the courts and after the US Open he will reach the second place of the ATP rankings.
- Zverev’s return to the top of the ATP rankings was not widely believed
- The German tennis player has had very consistent performances this year
- After the US Open, Zverev will move to the second position of the ATP rankings
When he returned to the ATP circuit after his injury in Paris, he was a bit overshadowed by the tennis players of the upcoming generation. Alcaraz had his first Grand Slam title at that point and Sinner or Rune were also clamouring for attention more and more.
Tennis players four or five years younger were on their way to the top of the ATP rankings. To many pundits, it didn’t seem likely that Zverev would return to the top.
Alexander Zverev described as silly the opinions of experts, which were directed at the fact that, unlike other tennis players, he was not developing enough. Among the names negatively assessing the twenty-six-year-old’s tennis prospects were Michael Stich and Boris Becker.
Zverev and his upward trajectory
Time has shown that the Hamburg native should not be written off. The German has been very consistent. This year he has only dropped one match in his opening match of the tournament.
He has reached at least the semi-finals in nine tournaments. It was Zverev who triumphed at the Masters in Rome. He beat Alcaraz at the Australian Open.
It may seem that the twenty-seven year old tennis player has few tournament triumphs under his belt. However, it should be taken into account that Zverev participates mainly in the most valuable events, such as Masters tournaments and Grand Slams. And most of the top ten players are not missing in those.
The German tennis player continues to perform reliably at the US open. During the first four matches, he hasn’t conceded a single complication. But he didn’t have to prove his quality against any seeded player.
The hardest part will come in the coming hours and days. Zverev will face the motivated Americans Fritz and possibly Tiafoe. He may not meet the number one seed Sinner until the final.
Regardless of anything else, though, he will be ranked second after the US open. He’ll leapfrog both Alcaraz and Djokovic. And he’s proven that he has no problem with his tennis development whatsoever.
