At the same time, he caught up with the legendary Federer and Nadal in the number of Grand Slams won. He has been extremely successful at Wimbledon in recent years. He became its champion for the third time in a row.
Djokovic started the final better. He took advantage of his opponent’s nervousness to break his serve at 2-1. The Italian made too many errors and didn’t play his game. The Serbian was well on his way to taking the first set. At 5-2 he even took a set point, but Berretini defended this long game. After that, the defending champion had a weaker moment.
He couldn’t complete the set and the Italian broke him. He then levelled at 5-5 and the opening set took a new twist. The players were able to hold their serves and the tiebreak decided the fate of the first set. Berrettini was unexpectedly better in it, winning it 7-4 and going into a surprising lead.
In the 2nd set, Djokovic had a rocket start. He took the Italian’s serve early on and went into a promising lead. He even took his opponent’s next serve and the outcome of this set was practically decided. But Berrettini didn’t give up. At 5-2, Djokovic again failed to serve and the underdog took back one serve.
In the next game, the defending champion had 3 set points in a row but he didn’t use them either and the Italian managed to reduce. At the third attempt the Serb managed to close out the 2nd set, winning it 6-4 and leveling at 1-1.
3. the set was clearly Djokovic’s. The Serbian again took Berretini’s serve very early and did not waste this advantage again. At 3-2, he had to turn away 2 break points, but he held on to this difficult moment and kept the break advantage. The defending champion won the 3rd set 6-4 and came close to defending his title.
But the Italian didn’t give up. He even led 30-0 in the 4th set at 3-2, but nothing came of it. Then the favourite finally broke his opponent’s resistance. Djokovic took the break and was only 2 games away from triumph. He managed to bring his lead to a winning end and confirmed his extravagance. Djokovic defeated Berretini 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to win his 20th Grand Slam title.
He thus caught up with Federer and Nadal in the historical table of Grand Slams won. At Wimbledon he became the overall champion for the sixth time. Djokovic will attack the legendary Golden Slam (title of all Grand Slams in 1 season) at the US Open.
Only one player in history has achieved it. In 1988, the legendary Steffi Graf did it.
