The first semi-final match of the men’s singles at Wimbledon was won by Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. The Serbian tennis player won it in three sets. What were the decisive situations in this duel?
Novak Djokovic didn’t have to deal with any big problems before the semi-final match. He entered Friday’s match against Jannik Sinner with a determination to stretch his winning streak at the All England Club to 34 matches.
Sinner’s journey through the tournament has also been quite sovereign. However, the Italian has not met a single tennis player from the elite 50 of the ATP rankings during this year’s Wimbledon. World number two Djokovic was therefore clearly the highest ranked opponent to cross the twenty-one-year-old Italian.
Djokovic was the clear favourite for the match, even though Sinner was 2-0 up on sets against him here last year. What were the defining moments of their rematch this year?
Djokovic’s efficiency in the opening games
At the beginning of the match, both tennis players had to contend with break points from their opponent. While Sinner didn’t use his, Djokovic didn’t make any mistakes. He soon led 3: 0 and gained a decisive lead to take the first set.
The inner strength of the Serb
Also in the second set, Djokovic took the Italian’s serve. Very important moments came a few moments later. The favourite of the match overcame the loss of a fiftieth, which was caused by his shout during the exchange.
To make matters worse, in the same game he was cautioned for exceeding the limit for his serve. Djoker overcame the awkward moments and won the long game for himself. The basis for winning the second set was in place.
Sinner’s great net play
Great attacks at the net kept the Italian in the game. In the first two sets he was successful in 19 out of 24 attempts. However, he didn’t show any more break points. Djokovic soon took a 2:0 set lead
Excellent use of the hawk’s eye by the Italian
Sinner certainly didn’t want the third set to be the last. He couldn’t afford to lose his serve, and he guessed the use of the hawk’s eye very well in the fifth game at 0:15. A millimetre line break allowed him to repeat his first serve, the Italian zigzagged this game. And soon after, his would also take the whole game.
Djokovic’s tiebreaks
The third set was decided by a shortened game. Djokovic’s strengths were once again on full display. From 1:3 the Serbian tennis player dominated the tiebreak and after less than three hours became the first finalist of this year’s Wimbledon.
