Novak Djokovic defeated Jannik Sinner in the final in two sets 6:3 and won his record seventh title at the ATP Finals. With this, he broke away from Roger Federer, who had triumphed six times.
The Serbian tennis player thus returned Sinner’s surprising defeat from the group, when he lost 1: 2 in sets. After today’s duel he has a positive record of 4: 1 in matches. Moreover, he played his 9th final and won his 7th title in his 16th appearance.
The journey through the tournament
In the main group he first took on Danish tennis player Holger Run – 2: 1 on sets. Then he surprisingly fell to Sinner and saved his progress by winning 2: 1 on sets against Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.
In the semi-finals Djokovic managed to knock out his biggest rival, the Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz in two sets – 6: 3 and 6: 2. This is the fourth time he has faced him in the current season, having won three of them. He only lost to him in a stunning Wimbledon final, which ended after a five-set battle.
Djokovic, even at his advanced age, is proving to everyone that even fresh young blood is still not enough for him.
A record title
With his seventh title, he is once again the most successful player of this tournament for the top eight. Runner-up Roger Federer needed 10 final appearances to win 6 titles. Djokovic only needed 9 final appearances for 7 titles.
The Serbian tennis player triumphed in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022, and he still lost in the final to Britain’s Andy Murray in 2016 and to Germany’s Alexander Zverev in 2018.
It was the 16th time in his career that he participated in the ATP Finals. Since 2007, he has only missed the tournament in 2017. He is just one participation away from the record feat of Federer, who has competed in the tournament 17 times.
