Leverkusen have had a disastrous start to the new season. Three competitive games, three losses. Two of them were league games. On Saturday, Bayer fell to Augsburg. Both Patrik Schick and Adam Hložek started in the starting lineup.

This is not the start of the new season Bayer Leverkusen imagined in their darkest dreams. In the cup, one of Germany’s best teams was no match for a third-tier team and was knocked out right from the start.

Yet it was in the cup that Leverkusen wanted to attack for the win. They were also entering the league with high ambitions. Right from the start, a tough match against Borussia Dortmund awaited them. However, the latter put in a good performance and won 1: 0. In addition, Patrik Schick burned two great chances.

The Bayer stars wanted to make up for it in the second round. Augsburg, who had a lot to do in the last round, came to their ground. In the first round, they were beaten 0:4 at home by Freiburg.

So the favourite was clear. In addition, both Schick and Adam Hložek were in the starting line-up. But the home team didn’t get off to a good start at all. Already in the 15th minute the team from Bavaria took the lead. Leverkusen were searching for a goal practically the whole first half, but luckily Aranguiz equalised in the 43rd minute.

The second half was a different story. However, Leverkusen failed to convert their chances. Sardar Amoun was the biggest burner of the game. He had several chances, but did not convert any of them.

It should be mentioned that Augsburg players also blocked many other shooting opportunities. Hložek had a couple of shooting attempts, but was unlucky not once. Schick got almost nothing in the match.

That’s what the WhoScored rating looked like. Hložek earned a 6.7. Schick took home a 6.2.

Hložek went off in the 62nd minute, Schick played the whole game. The fact is that Hložek was almost overlooked by his teammates at times. You could see that the interplay was not yet anywhere near what the whole team wanted it to be.

In the 82nd minute Augsburg scored the winning goal. Leverkusen are almost at the bottom of the table after two games. In the next round they have a tough match against Hoffenheim.
