Disastrous Liverpool! Arsenal had as many touches of the ball in his own penalty area as in the last five rounds
After seven games, Arsenal finally got the better of Liverpool and although they only won 3:2, they deserved the three points. They outplayed their opponents in every way, especially in touches in Alisson Becker’s penalty area.
After seven games, Arsenal finally got the better of Liverpool and although they only won 3:2, they deserved the three points. They outplayed their opponents in every way, especially in touches in Alisson Becker’s penalty area.
Arsenal went into the match with Liverpool in very good form, on the other hand with a terrible record in mutual matches. Out of the last seven confrontations, the Gunners have lost five times, drawn twice and scored a single goal in them.
Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and especially Roberto Firmino had excellent individual records against Arsenal. This time, however, a tighter defence than in recent years awaited this trio. Mikel Arteta assembled a defensive line of four stoppers.
Still, Arsenal’s play was dynamic and Liverpool’s young and quick strikers gave them problems. In particular, Trent Alexander Arnold was on fire on the right side of the defensive line, with Gabriel Martinelli easily getting into the opposition’s box through him.
In the final, Arsenal players scored 46 touches with the ball in the opponent’s sixteen. They touched the ball more times than in the last five league games combined. And they were up against Virgil van Dijk, one of the best stoppers of recent years.
The fact that Liverpool have only once in their history given their opponents more space in their own sixteen speaks volumes about the exceptional 46 touches in the whitewash. Against Manchester City in November 2019, when, ironically, the Citizens, despite being outnumbered, lost 1: 3. Pep Guardiola’s charges finished with 48 touches.
