Tomáš Macháč is the only Czech participant in the men’s tennis pool of the Olympic Games. He will face Diego Schwartzman in the second round on Tuesday morning. How will the match turn out?
Diego Schwartzman is a twenty-eight-year-old tennis player originally from Argentina. He is currently ranked thirteenth in the ATP rankings, but his maximum ranking is eighth. Among his greatest achievements is his semifinal appearance at the French Open last year.
At the Tokyo Olympics, he met Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru in the first round. The Argentine won after an evenly-matched game in sets 7::5 and 6::4, but did not put in an ideal performance. He scored 34 unforced errors during the match.
His opponent on Tuesday will be Tomas Machac, a 20-year-old native of Beroun. He is ranked 148th in the ATP rankings, but he is still the second highest ranked player from the Czech Republic.
Normally, Tomáš Macháč would not have fought his way to Tokyo, but due to the coronavirus pandemic and the rules associated with it, a large number of players from the world’s top players refused to participate. The place was left for the winner of the challenger from Nur-Sultan.
On Sunday, Tomas Machac took on Joao Sousa, a thirty-two-year-old player from Portugal. The Czech player lost the opening set in the tiebreak, but won the next two sets 6:4 and was able to enjoy the progress.
So what to bet on? Schwartzman is the paper favourite, but he is not doing too well on the hard surface. In 2021 he played only ten matches here, four of which he lost. His performance on Sunday was not optimal either.
Tomáš Macháč, on the other hand, likes the hard surface. In 2021, he played fifteen matches on it, during which he was defeated only three times. With a little bit of luck, he could advance to the next round.
