Jiří Procházka made a big decision on Monday when he chose his opponent for his first title defence. But not everyone likes his choice. Former champion Jan Blachowicz is disappointed with the Moravian fighter.
It was October last year when Jan Blachowicz surprisingly fell short against Glover Teixeira and lost his belt. Since then, he’s still trying to get the title back in his hands. He defeated (thanks to an injury to his opponent) Aleksandar Rakic and hoped his next fight would be a title fight.
When Jiri Prochazka became champion, that was the last thing on offer. Indeed, a big fight between Blachowicz and the Moravian fighter had already been discussed, which would have attracted tens of thousands of fans. This idea is also liked by the welterweight champion himself.
But Procházka was and still is not satisfied with his performance against Teixeira. That’s why he announced on Monday that he will make his first defence against the Brazilian veteran. He wants to prove to everyone and show why he is the rightful champion.
The question is how the UFC, who wanted Magomed Ankalaev as their next challenger, will approach it. However, Prochazka announced the decision after negotiations with the organization, so it’s possible that they actually gave him a choice.
The disappointment was not hidden by Blachowicz on social media, who recalled Prochazka’s words that the Polish 39-year-old fighter is the biggest challenge for him.
“I respect you, champion, but the samurai code was not followed,” added the former champion, who still wants to return to the top of the pyramid.
Walk, however, gave him a clear answer, “ With Glover, it’s a matter of honor and duty to put on a clean fight. That’s more than a challenge.”
