Did Italy win the game before the penalty shootout? Chiellini and Alba’s video went around the world, what were they saying?
The Euro semi-final between Italy and Spain ended in a draw after extra time, and so it went to penalties. Usually both captains look very serious during the draw, but not Chiellini, who teased Alba like a friend on the patch behind his house.

You may well have seen the video, as it has been all over the world since last night. When the captains of Italy and Spain went to the referee to draw lots for which goal and who would kick first, it was almost comical.
Giorgio Chiellini couldn’t stop laughing and was beaming with incredible energy. Why did he tease Jordi Alba so much?
The Spanish captain is not very good at English, so he didn’t understand the referee’s instructions. He thought the penalty would be taken on the right side of the goal, in front of the Spanish fans.
But Chiellini didn’t like that and started shouting at Alba in Spanish, ” Mentiroso, mentiroso! “
The referee agreed with Chiellini and the penalty was actually kicked in front of the Italian fans. And then the regular stopper continued to tease Alba like a friend at training.
For many, this was the turning point, when Italy won the game before the penalties. Chiellini’s incredible confidence and in turn Alba’s nervousness was such a sign of how the penalties would turn out.
In Spain, of course, this video caused a lot of hype. A lot of fans are saying that if captain Sergio Ramos had been at the tournament, Chiellini would never have made it to him. La Furia Roja supporters certainly didn’t like the mockery of their captain.
Moreover, other debaters added another argument. “This is what happens when the captain of the Spanish national team is a Catalan,” the fans fumed. There is indeed a lot of animosity between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, especially with Madrid.
Catalan players and fans are sometimes accused of not enjoying Spain’s matches as much as they should and of preferring to set up their own Catalan national team.
