The Novak Djokovic scandal still resonates in the sports world. And it’s probably not going away. The Serbian tennis player ended Thursday’s training session early, sparking speculation about whether he learned of the deportation decision ahead of time.
Although Djokovic was drawn in the first round by compatriot Mimir Kecmanovic, the world number one still does not know if he will be able to enter the tournament.
While the court has reinstated his visa, allowing him to stay in the country, his fate is now in the hands of Immigration Minister Alex Hawke. He does not have to ignore the court’s decision to deport Djokovic. In that case, the Serbian tennis player would not be allowed to come to Australia for another three years.
So at the moment there is a lot of pressure on Hawke, the whole tennis world is waiting for his decision. The Australian public is clearly against Djokovic, in other countries the Serb has about the same number of supporters and opponents.
Hawke was originally supposed to make his decision by Wednesday, but in the end he took until Friday. That’s when he’s supposed to make a final decision on whether or not to deport Djokovic.
so the 34-year-old tennis player continues to prepare on Rod Laver’s courts. On Thursday morning, Djokovic had the court booked for two hours, only to be approached by fitness coach Marco Panichi less than half an hour into the session and shown some messages on his phone.
The reaction? Djokovic abruptly packed his bags, left the court and ended practice. So media around the world logically started speculating what could have been in that message. Could Djokovic have learned of Hawk’s decision sooner? Or was it something else?
