Juventus are not having an ideal season. For a long time it wasn’t completely bad through the results, but then came the punishment, another investigation and it was like a blanket fell on the team. But not on Ángel Di María. He showed his genius again on Thursday night.
Although Juventus started the season in the Champions League, they absolutely failed to make the group stage. It failed to compete with PSG, Benfica and Maccabi Haifa, taking only three points in six games. Thanks to a better score, they finished third.
This meant relegation. In the spring, Massimiliano Allegri’s selection will only have to face the Europa League, where there is a lot of competition. There are big clubs like Barcelona, Manchester United and Sevilla.
Nantes, however, was waiting for the Italian side. Juventus started the knockout double-header at home. But before the start of the Europa League, the club had all sorts of problems.
Speculation about problems in the cabin, points deduction, further investigations that could end in a points deduction that would push Juventus to the bottom of the Serie A table.
In the last few games, however, it hasn’t been too noticeable. Juventus had won their last three games and wanted to continue their good run in the Europa League. And the game against Nantes started very solidly.
Ángel Di María showed his genius again and sent a fantastic pass behind the Nantes defence in the 13th minute. He found Federico Chiesa, who sent the ball to Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian cannonballer then had no problem opening the scoring and sending Juventus into the lead.
The Bianconeri deservedly led 1-0 after a first half in which they were much more dangerous.
