Devil’s Diary: For the first time since his departure, Sir Alex Ferguson must be feeling good about Manchester United
It took Manchester United over 9 years to find someone who could put together a team that could pick up points based on good performance, plus the hope that it could get better and better. That is the impression that lingers after Saturday’s draw with Chelsea, and hopefully Sir Alex Ferguson shares it.
It took Manchester United over 9 years to find someone who could put together a team that could pick up points based on good performance, plus the hope that it could get better and better. That is the impression that lingers after Saturday’s draw with Chelsea, hopefully shared by Sir Alex Ferguson who, along with the fans in the stands, had to suffer for over 9 years.
David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (not counting interim coaches Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick, although that applies to them too), all of them have not come close to the performances that the team under the legendary Scottish coach has been able to produce year after year with Manchester United.
The closest thing to that was Ferguson’s Norwegian juggernaut, which admittedly recorded an often breathtaking run of wins, even against top teams, but it was clear to most that such good results wouldn’t last long when the game being shown certainly had no future. This was confirmed very soon.
The salvation of Erik ten Hag
It is certainly too early to make any big judgements, but since the arrival of the Dutch coach, there is a game by game progression that is certainly warming the hearts of Manchester United fans.
It used to be the case that the Red Devils could beat one of England’s top sides, but they certainly didn’t outplay them on the pitch. That hasn’t even been the case against Liverpool and Arsenal.
We have to be honest, and the recent slim wins by Everton, Southampton or Leicester by one goal certainly couldn’t inspire any great respect in their opponents either.
However, everything turned around against Tottenham and most recently against Chelsea, although the latter did not take three points from Stamford Bridge for Hague’s charges.
On the positive side, however, they were the more dominant team on the pitch and managed to push the Blues at the very end, thanks to which they won a very important point, while 2 of their rivals for the place guaranteeing the Champions League for next year were thrown in the bin.
One swallow may not make a spring, but we now have two in hand, plus the belief that we will only get better. Even the Cristiano Ronaldo sweep alone proves that the Hag has everything firmly in his hands for now, something no one has managed to do since the Ferguson era. Even Mourinho has gotten out of hand.
Moreover, Manchester United have a number of weaker opponents until the January derby with City. So it’s time to pick up points and move up. The sight of the Champions League is very important for what is happening in the transfer market, where the Red Devils are sure to be very active for some time to come.
To get our feet back on the ground though. The game against Manchester City showed that the whole team still has a lot of work to do. But it was enough for the other top teams, albeit with luck…
