The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already cost the Ukrainian people many lives. Not only have the attacks affected the lives of most families living in Ukraine, but sport has also suffered significantly.
As we recently informed you, all football competitions in Ukraine have been stopped. As a result, stadiums are empty and clubs are experiencing many financial losses.
In addition to the loss of human life, Ukraine is also experiencing a great deal of material damage. As the Desna Chernihiv football club said in a statement on Friday, their home stadium was destroyed after an air raid by Russian fighter jets. The club, which plays in Ukraine’s top league, lost its home.
The stadium in the town of Chernihiv was hit this week along with the town’s library. Footage circulating on the club’s Instagram showed debris strewn around the city’s Olympic Sports Centre.
“For the third time, Moscow’s occupiers have fired on the most dangerous piece of military infrastructure in the city, our home team’s stadium. In the photos you can see the consequences of the night bombing,” reads a statement from Desna Chernihiv.
“But we will be able to rebuild all this, we will only become stronger and better and you, ‘sousedé’, will live with it all your life,” the Ukrainian club added.
As we can also see on the club’s Instagram, one of the club’s coaches decided to stand against the odds and fight against the Russian troops. Thus, the coach of the under-19 youth team Alexander Sergeyevich literally became a hero of the city.
