Arsenal defeated newcomer Brentford 0-2 in their opening Premier League match. Arsenal didn’t deserve any applause or admiration for their performance, but one player was given a huge round of applause from all the fans when he came on.
It was Bukay Saku, the Arsenal youngster who represented England at EURO 2020. The talented Englishman only made the shortlist for the final tournament at the age of nineteen. Despite his young age, he showed himself in a good light at the championship.
His breakthrough came in the final match against Italy, who eventually won the EURO. The final match ended 1:1 and it came down to penalties, after which the Italians were victorious. England converted only two of the five penalty kicks. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who came on at the end of extra time to take the penalty kick, failed. It was Sancho who was sent off for the decisive fifth.
Unfortunately, he ended up the same as his previous two teammates. He missed the penalty. England lost the final and the fans were very unhappy. A lot of them turned against their players. It was the three players who missed the penalty who took the brunt of it.
Three players were racially abused and even threatened. But there were also fans who stood up for the players. A beautiful moment we have just witnessed in the opening game of the Premier League.
Saka started on the bench, but after about an hour of play he was replaced by his teammate Balogun. As soon as he entered the pitch, all the fans rose from their seats and started applauding him.
The big applause lasted for a while, and the fans let the young player know that he doesn’t have to worry about the missed penalty or the haters who post on social media. He received a similar gesture from the Tottenham fans who gave him a round of applause during the preliminary match.
