De Minaur and his big win
Matches against Djokovic are always a big challenge. After all, the world number one chooses carefully which tennis events he takes part in. That makes it all the more valuable to beat the Serb.
The 24-year-old Australian did it at the United Cup. Alex De Minaur is certainly not an outsider from the depths of the ATP rankings, after all, he is ranked twelfth. Still, Djokovic was the clear favourite.
However, De Minaur defeated him twice 6:4 and ended the incredible record of the native of Belgrade in Australia. In fact, Djokovic had won 43 matches in a row on Australian soil until this duel.
And the promising Australian nicknamed “The Demon” admits that this win means a lot to him. After all, it’s his first triumph over a world number one.
Great service and words of praise from Hewitt
In the match against Djokovic, De Minaur relied incredibly on his first serve. He only lost one ball after his first serve in the whole match. This record was also supported by his seven aces.
His backhand pins and stopballs also received praise after the aforementioned duel. Lleyton Hewitt also had a lot of positive things to say about the Sydney native. He is the mentor of the best Australian player of today.
Hewitt compares his compatriot to a sponge and admires his desire to keep learning. He has always believed that there is a lot of potential in this tennis player and it is now starting to come to the fore.
In conclusion..
A promising Australian who is getting into great shape. Plus, he’s linked to the legendary Hewitt. What more could you ask for ahead of the Australian Open?
Besides Nadal’s return (and not only his), De Minaur adds to the reasons why we can really look forward to the opening Grand Slam of the season with all our hearts.
