Deliverance! Coutinho leaves Barcelona to join his friend Gerrard in England
Deliverance for both sides. Both for Coutinho, who was struggling in Catalonia, and for Barcelona, who won’t have to pay the Brazilian’s big salary.
Deliverance for both sides. Both for Coutinho, who was struggling in Catalonia, and for Barcelona, who will not have to pay the Brazilian’s big salary.
This transfer has just gone horribly wrong. Barcelona bought Coutinho from Liverpool in January 2018 for £135 million, making him the second most expensive player in the club’s history.
However, he never lived up to the high expectations. During his engagement at Camp Nou, he was often injured and when he did play, his performances were very poor. After a year and a half he went on loan to Bayern, where he contributed to the demolition of Barcelona 8-2 with two goals in the Champions League quarter-finals.
But now his time in Catalonia is coming to an end. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian footballer is returning to the Premier League, where he thrived the most. Not to Liverpool, but to Aston Villa.
However, there is at least a small connection with the Reds, as the Villains are coached by Steven Gerrard, Coutinho’s friend and former teammate at Liverpool. He comes to Birmingham on loan until the end of the season, with Aston Villa expected to take the bulk of his salary.
And that is key news for Barcelona. Because the latter is struggling a lot with financial fairplay and cannot register Ferran Torres, a fresh signing. The departure of Coutinho will free up a large part under the salary cap and the Manchester City reinforcement can finally be completed. Simply a liberation for both sides.
