De Klassieker had to be brought to an early end due to a fan frenzy! Check out the footage from the Ajax stadium
If the main topic of discussion in the Czech Republic was the Prague derby, the match between Ajax and Feyenoord also had a huge impact. This had to be stopped early because of the fans’ rampage, and the home fans threw pyrotechnics on the pitch.
The showpiece of the Dutch Eredivisie between Ajax and Feyenoord had a huge impact. This had to be stopped early because of the fans’ rampage, and the home fans threw pyrotechnics on the pitch.
Ajax and Feyenoord had the better of the visitors, who took the lead in the ninth minute.
Santiago Tomas Gimenez scored from close range, assisted by Quinten Timber. Eight minutes later, the home side claimed a penalty kick. However, the referee was against it, which understandably aroused passions in the stadium.
The home fans were even more frustrated when the author of the first goal increased Feyenoord’s lead to 2:0 in the 18th minute. The match was thus interrupted for the first time in the 21st minute, but then the game could continue.
But the home side suffered another blow. In the 37th minute, Paixao made it 3:0 for Feyenoord, with a pass into the penalty area from Gimenez.
No more goals were scored before the end of the first half, but the match was stopped for the second time. The referee, quite understandably, set an extra ten minutes, but even that did not change the score.
Only ten minutes of the second half passed and the match was interrupted again after the fans threw more pyrotechnics on the pitch. This time, however, referee Serdar Gözübüyük did not let the game continue and ended the match prematurely.
Statements from the Eredivisie and Ajax
“De Klassieker is permanently terminated after repeated use and throwing of pyrotechnics on the field of play,” read the Eredivisie statement.
“We are particularly disappointed that this match turned out this way. It is very difficult for the whole organisation. It is one of the most important matches in Dutch football and it has been stopped. This is extremely sad,” Ajax director Jan van Halst said in an official statement.
