Manchester City made it through the opening quarter-final of the Champions League, beating Atlético Madrid 1-0 at home. The match offered a minimum of chances, the Citizens were more active, but struggled in the final stages.
Kevin de Bruyne sent the first shot of the match, but the Belgian midfielder’s shot was blocked by the visiting defence. As expected, the Citizens were conquering the opposition’s defence, even Ilkay Gundogan’s 22nd minute shot from outside the box didn’t go between the posts.
The rest of the first half didn’t offer much action. Manchester clearly dominated the ball, but apart from an inaccurate shot by John Stones it led to nothing. We went into the box with a goalless draw.
After the change of sides, Atlético were active, but after a few minutes Manchester took the reins again. In the 55th minute, Kevin de Bruyne fired dangerously from a direct kick, but Jan Oblak managed to move and deflect the shot.
Nine minutes later, Aymerick Laporte headed over but missed by inches. By the 70th minute, the stadium was celebrating. Substitute Phil Foden found de Bruyne, who sent the ball to the far post with his right.
De Bruyne was on the end of a second goal ten minutes later, this time his shot was kicked off the line by Stefan Savic. So Manchester won 1-0 at home and will go to Madrid with a lead. However, let’s not underestimate Diego Simeone’s rematch.
