His form this year is not ideal. Still, Stefanos Tsitsipas has a lot to build on at the Olympics. And also something to return to his opponent. For it was here that he had a match with Novak Djokovic that could haunt him for the rest of his career.

  • Tsitsipas takes on Djokovic today in Paris
  • This match will be a rematch of the 2021 French Open final
  • The Greek has a good record on clay and is determined to beat the Serb

Winning a Grand Slam title is usually every tennis player’s biggest dream. Stefanos Tsitsipas hasn’t got his yet.

The Greek tennis player has already triumphed on the ATP circuit eleven times and came close to the coveted Major title. In the final of Roland Garros 2021 he was leading 2:0 in sets, but he did not make the final step.

On the other side of the net was Novak Djokovic. The Serbian tennis player won three sets in a row, taking the sets 6:7, 2:6, 6:3, 6:2, 6:4 to celebrate his 19th Grand Slam title.

The Serbian also has his dreams. He wants to win an Olympic gold medal and it is Tsitsipas who stands in his way in the quarter-finals of the Paris tournament.

Tsitsipas and his determination

The 25-year-old Greek is not having his best season. He has dropped out of the ATP top ten and he hasn’t heard many encouraging words from his former coach either.

However, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Tsitsipas can do it on clay and proved it in April with a triumph in Monte Carlo. At this Masters tournament he took on Zverev, Ruud and Sinner, among others.

He is also doing very well in Paris. He confirmed this in the eighth round with a win over the clay specialist Baez of Argentina.

And at Roland Garros, the Greek is confident. ” On these courts I have gained confidence and motivation,” he says of the impact of the venue where three years ago he was one set away from his dream title. He feels he could have won the final match he described.

Still, the Greek has proven to himself that he can be the best here, and it is with this belief and energy that he will go into Thursday’s clash with Djokovic. The Serbian-Greek duel is the highlight of tonight’s tennis programme under five rings and will start at 7pm.
