From 23 to 27 November, the 110th edition of the Davis Cup culminated in Malaga. The prestigious men’s national team tennis competition was won by the Canadians after their final victory over the Australians. At the same time, we learned who the Czech tennis players will face in the February qualification.

The final tournament, played on the hard court at the Martin Carpena Arena, featured eight teams in total. Specifically, they were Italy, USA, Germany, Canada, Spain, Croatia, the Netherlands and Australia. Defending champions Russia were eliminated from this year’s event.
From the four quarter-final bouts, the pairs for the semi-finals crystallized. It featured clashes between the Australians and Croatians and the Italians and Canadians. And both duels were dramatic.
Their decision came in the final doubles. In the first mentioned case the pairs Max Purcell, Jordan Thompson and Nikola Mektić, Mate Pavić competed for the key point. In the end, the opposing team was happy because they won after 6::7, 7::5 and 6::4 sets.
In the final they were joined by the representatives of the country of the maple leaf. Also, the rather thrilling deciding doubles match of Félix Auger-Aliassime, Vasek Pospisil – Matteo Berrettini, Fabio Fognini ended with 7::6 and 7::5.
The battle for the “salad bowl” was without doubles, as the team of captain Frank Dancevic won 2: 0 after the singles matches. Who exactly was responsible for the big success on Sunday?
The first important step was taken by Denis Shapovalov, who defeated Thanassi Kokkinakis 6: 2 and 6: 4 in an hour and a half. He was then followed by the world number six, the aforementioned young Auger-Aliassime. He defeated the Australian Alex De Minaur after sets 6: 3 and 6: 4.
Canada celebrates its first Davis Cup triumph. It became the sixteenth country to join the list of winners of this traditional competition. With 32 victories, the USA dominates the historical standings, while our national team remains on the top three positions from 1980, 2012 and 2013.
By the way, the Czech Republic already knows the name of its opponent for the qualification of the upcoming edition. The fate of the non-playing captain Jaroslav Navrátil’s team has assigned Portugal. The game will be played on the soil of the opponent from the Iberian Peninsula.
