Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or on Monday. For the seventh time in his career, which is a record. While his previous triumphs were undisputed, many experts and fans agreed that he got this year’s one more for the name. Several players, like Alphonso Davies, agree.
The Ballon d’Or is handed out on a calendar year basis, this time for the period January 2021 – November 2021. Messi did pull Barcelona through, but it was only enough to finish third in the league and drop out in the Champions League eighth round. In the summer, however, he dominated the Copa América, which was the biggest contributor to winning the award.
But since his move to PSG, Messi has not shone. He has scored just one league goal all autumn, and at the time of the vote he had a 4+0 record. Yet, according to most journalists, he was the best footballer in the world last year. Not to mention that Lewandowski was scoring a goal almost every game.
Several players and experts objected to this result. Namely Toni Kroos, Iker Casillas and Thomas Müller. Alphonso Davies also chimed in.
The Bayern left back couldn’t understand how Messi could win the Ballon d’Or at the expense of Lewandowski. And the Canadian speedster is one of Messi’s great admirers, he even has a photo of him and the Argentine on his bedroom wall.
“I don’t want to talk about it. It doesn’t make sense. I’ll leave it like this. Because if I start talking about it, it might hurt a lot of people’s feelings,” Davies said on his Instagram live stream. However, he did reveal his opinion afterwards.
“Lewandowski deserved to win. Give the guy at least the Ballon d’Or for last year. You can’t tell me… Oh, my God, I’m so angry. I want to punch something, ” Davies raged.
A lot of experts and players agreed that the Ballon d’Or is no longer an award for actual performance, but more about the names and PR of the players. For example, the legendary Johan Cruijff’s statement that the Ballon d’Or is just a poll where a few journalists vote for their mates has been widely brought up.
