National defender David Zima has earned a solid position in Turin FC in a short period of time. Now in his sixth month, he is getting used to the rigours of Serie A and seems to be succeeding.
Unlike at Slavia, where he played as a left-back in a four-man defence, David Zima plays in Italy in a three-man system and mainly from the right.
He has played in 11 of the last 13 competitive matches and has made seven starts in the starting line-up. The last time was in the league match against Sassuolo, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
“I had no problem with it from the beginning. It took me at most three weeks to get used to this model. I don’t see any difference to the classic two-stopper system. Only now I play on the right. But I think that in the three defender model it is better for me to be on the right. It’s more attacking. So in terms of centres and passing, it’s more favourable for me to play with my stronger foot.” he said in an interview with gol.cz.
But the whole team is also doing well. At the moment, the Turin team is in a very solid 10th place, six points behind the 6th place, which means a ticket to the European Cups. In addition to this, it has one postponed match to play.
But Zima is optimistic and believes that the team will fight for the European Cups. However, he is aware that there is a very long way to participate in Europe.
He feels that he has taken a big step forward and that he is still improving: “I think the five months have been successful. I don’t know if I had any specific expectations. I came to Italy with the goal to improve, to try to play one of the best competitions in the world. That was my biggest motivation. It’s hard tomake it abroad, no matter where you are.”
The experience that Zima is gaining in the prestigious Serie A will certainly come in handy for the Czech national team, which has been short of quality at the stopper position lately.
