The player, who has his own statue outside the Etihad Stadium, and who was part of the extraordinary Spanish generation that ruled world football between 2008 and 2012. That’s right, we’re talking about David Silva.
The 37-year-old Real Sociedad player finally announced his retirement on Thursday, July 27, after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season training with his current club.
So, after Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who also retired this year, this is another big star who will leave behind a very significant mark in world football indeed.
On his Twitter account, Silva posted a video charting his entire career, in which he bids farewell to professional football after many years.
It’s time to say goodbye…
“Today is a sad day for me. Today is the time to say goodbye to something I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it’s time to say goodbye to my teammates who have been like family to me. I will miss you very much. Thank you because you have always made me feel at home.”
It was professional football that Silva started at Valencia, from where he moved to Manchester City in 2010 for just under €29 million. And it was at the English club that he recorded the most successful period of his career.
With the Citizens he won four championship titles, two FA Cup championships or five English League Cup victories. He also won the domestic cup in Spain. Specifically, once with Valencia and the second time with Real Sociedad, where he moved just after his time in England ended in August 2020.
Oh, and on the national stage he won two golds at the Euro and one at the World Cup. At club level, he played a total of 744 games and recorded a record of 121 goals and 194 assists.
