Key Pastrnak
David Pastrnak sent the Bruins into the lead at 8:27 of the first period when he crossed Matt Grzelcyk’s shot. He then stepped up after a mistake by Tim Stuzle when he intercepted his pass and scored on an unassisted rush on the goalie to make it 2: 0.
In the second period, Shane Pinto scored on the power play, but Justin Brazeau gave Boston the two-goal lead back. Just before the siren signaling the end of the second period, Senators captain and leader Brady Tkachuk reduced the score to 3:2 for the Bruins.
Pastrnak’s next moment came at the start of the third period, when after just 4 minutes and 43 seconds he completed his hat trick and the caps started flying. Boston took the lead 4:2, then Jesper Boqvist increased the score to 5:2 and Brazeau scored his second goal of the game to make it 6:2.
Boston won its third game in a row and currently dominates the NHL. Ottawa is the opposite, having lost nine of its last twelve games.
Historical stats
Pastrnak recorded the 17th hat trick of his career and the second in the NHL this season. Kevin Shattenkirk, who had three assists, goaltender Linus Ullmark, who covered 30 of 32 shots, and Brazaue, who scored two goals, also had a strong performance.
This game must have been a very spicy one for Pastrnak, as he not only recorded his 17th career hat trick, but he moved into 7th place on the Boston Bruins’ all-time scoring list.
What did he say after the game?
He is currently 345 goals behind the famous Ray Bourque, who managed to score 395 goals. “When you get it going, it’s always fun. This hat trick makes me even more happy because I scored it with two backhand shots and one from the air. I don’t get to do that every day, so it was special this time,” Pastrnak said after the game.
Boston is now fighting for a regular season win. “We’re not going after the President’s Trophy, we don’t care how many times we finish. We’re mainly focused on ourselves, on the upcoming games. Our game is not what we want it to be. We’re going game by game, so we’ll be ready when the going gets tough,” Pastrňák added.
