David de Gea may sign for Bayern, but there’s a catch

It’s been a month and a half since he’s been a free agent. So far, no one has shown enough interest in David de Gea to contact him about the terms of his contract. Will the Spanish goalkeeper get an offer from a big club after all?

It’s been a month and a half since he’s been a free agent. So far, no one has shown enough interest in David de Gea to contact him about the terms of his contract. Will the Spanish goalkeeper get an offer from a big club after all?

After André Onana left Inter for Manchester United just to replace the Spanish goalkeeper and Samir Handanovic retired, Inter had to look for a replacement. He pointed to Bayern’s Yann Sommer. The Swiss goalkeeper had been deputising for Bayern captain and legend Manuel Neuer in the spring.

In the summer, the Bavarian number one was supposed to return to the team and thus between the three sticks. Unfortunately, complications arose and Manuel Neuer will be unavailable for some time. Bayern currently only have Sven Ulreich available.

A man who has dedicated several years of his career to the Bayern bench. He was deputy to one of the best goalkeepers in history, only coming on when Neuer was injured or in the cup and at the end of a crucial league season. At the weekend, he caught the Super Cup against Leipzig. Lost 1:3. His best years are behind him, he can’t be number one at a big club.

So who does Bayern have in mind? Stefan Ortega from Manchester City and David de Gea. But the primary solution to the whole situation is the German goalkeeper. He has a similar role to Ulreich at City. He’s filling in for Ederson, which doesn’t happen very often. The clubs can’t agree on a transfer fee yet. Ortega would be ideal though, he’d keep part of the season and then leave the spot to Neuer and fill the number two role.

David de Gea is the replacement for Ortega. The Spanish goalkeeper still doesn’t have a club and that means he would be free. Although with some signing bonus. De Gea knows the situation in big clubs, he knows what is expected from a goalkeeper in such clubs.

However, the problem would arise when Neuer returns. The Spaniard was one of the highest paid players in the Premier League. He would have to take a pay cut and endure the role of number two, his departure from United already indicated he couldn’t take it.

So Bayern face a big decision. Either they go the Ortega route, which will be less costly on wages and hassle-free later on, or they reach for world class quality but will have to deal with some problems. One thing is clear though, at the end of the transfer window, Sven Ulreich will be sitting on the bench at Bayern (as he has been for several years now) and filling the role of number two
