Darwin Núñez is slowly starting to get going after a tough start, and so is Liverpool, who have an upward trajectory ahead of them
Darwin Núñez is experiencing the complete opposite when he arrives in England. While Erling Haaland, with whom he has logically been compared since the start of the season, has been scoring goal after goal, the Uruguayan striker has followed a somewhat thorny path.
Darwin Núñez is experiencing the complete opposite when he arrives in England. While Erling Haaland, with whom he has logically been compared since the start of the season, has been scoring goal after goal, the Uruguayan striker has followed a somewhat thorny path. Recently, however, his killer instinct is starting to show in full!
Núñez got off to a great start in the Premier League, assisting a goal and scoring one himself in 39 minutes in the opening game of the season against Fulham. However, in the very next game against Crystal Palace he couldn’t keep his nerve and got himself sent off for the next three games.
He did not return to league action until October and managed to score against Arsenal and on Wednesday against West Ham, whose goal meant three points for the Reds and a first goal celebration at Anfield for the 23-year-old striker.
So currently Núñez has 5 goals scored in 12 games. This admittedly looks ridiculous compared to Haaland, who has scored 20 goals in 14 games.
However, we have to take into account several factors. The first is certainly the time spent on the pitch:: The Norwegian striker played a total of 1,139 minutes, while the Uruguayan played 573.
Moreover, Liverpool have been in a slight crisis since the beginning of the season, when Jurgen Klopp had to deal with a large number of players. Manchester City, on the other hand, have played very well since the summer and everything has settled down much faster than the Reds.
Then Sky Sports came up with some very interesting stats, confirming that Núñez was definitely a good signing for the Liverpool team.
Liverpool are currently in 7th place with 16 points, while they are 7 points behind second placed Manchester City and have an extra game to play against Newcastle and Tottenham. Therefore, it can be counted on that if the Reds players continue these performances, like Núñez, the table will climb upwards.
Moreover, Liverpool will face Nottingham Forest and Leeds in the next two league rounds. After that, they will face Tottenham, but again a series of games against weaker opponents will follow. Therefore, Klopp’s squad can be expected to go up.
